A rekenrek (or “number rack”) is a simple yet powerful math tool designed to help students make sense of numbers. With rows of beads grouped in fives and tens, the rekenrek highlights structure, not just counting. Students use it to see numbers, subitize, and develop flexible strategies for addition, subtraction, and even multiplication. Instead of memorizing isolated facts, the rekenrek invites students to notice patterns, make connections, and build a deep understanding of how numbers work.
To help you bring the rekenrek to life in your classroom, I’ve created a set of rekenrek cards and a student recording sheet. These resources are ready to download and use right away, whether you are introducing the tool or giving students extra practice to strengthen their number sense. Use them during whole-class lessons, small groups, or independent practice to support flexible thinking with numbers.

Thank you so much for the rekenrek resources as it is one of my goals to use this tool more frequently with my students this year. I particularly appreciate how you printed the equation with the sum first _= _ + _ Thank you Graham!!
